1. What’s the Stroke ?

Strokes are caused by blood clots and broken blood vessels in the brain.
The brain could have damage, consciousness disorder, paralysis, speech defect and in the worst case may bring about death. Immediate care is very important. It is essential to transfer the patient to the hospital where an immediate check and treatment can be provided.

2. Certification of High-level Stroke Center

For stroke patients,

a) People who have disease of kidney, heart, lungs and other organs.
b) People who have uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes. There are many people who need treatment for stroke and other serious complications.
c) We must quickly respond to the pregnant and parturient, the child and some other special cases.

We are the only hospital in the north part of Nagasaki prefecture that has all of the departments for correspondence of strokes. We have received the “Certification of High-level Stroke Center” from Nagasaki prefecture in March 2010. Neurosurgery and Neurology work together as a team for the stroke examination and we’re working on education concerning strokes.

3. Our New Initiatives

In April 2012, “Emergency and Critical Care Center” was established at our hospital.
Along with this, more stroke patients are expected to be treated.
Therefore, strengthening the “stroke center” for the purpose of providing more advanced specialized medical care the neurological and neurosurgical departments have decided to work together on stroke care as one team.

4. Especially for the Stroke Center

a) Determination of treatment policy: In stroke care, Medication and Surgical treatment are required to be used properly. The conclusion is vitally important and it requires high level of expertise. We will accurately decide the treatment policy at our Stroke Center.

b) Super acute stage cerebral infarction therapy: Especially in the case of cerebral infarction, we have a system that can always deal with it as follows.

A) If it is within 4.5 hours after onset, a medicine called tPA will be used for melting a thrombus.
B) If it is within 8 hours after onset, it may be possible to remove the thrombus by placing the catheter in the blood vessel.

c) Training for stroke specialists and initial training for residents: Our hospital is an educational hospital that accepts many interns. In addition, our hospital has been approved as an “Educational Training Hospital certified by the Japan Stroke Society”, and we, the Stroke Center will enhance the training for the stroke specialists.

d) Enhancement of our team medical care: We will enrich the education of all medical staff involved in stroke practice such as nurses, rehabilitation staff, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, medical social workers, etc., and implement our team medical care. Furthermore, we hold a group study about the stroke and case study conference once a month with paramedic specialists.
